Energy is commonly described as the engine that drives the economy. Petroleum products consumed in the Gambia are all imported. The petroleum requirements of the country consist of gasoline (regular and premium), kerosene, diesel oil (gasoil), LPG and jet fuel. Total energy consumed in 2006 is estimated at 506 thousand Ton Oil Equivalent (TOE). Petroleum products arethe second most important source of energy in the country, after fuel wood, accounting for about 17% of total primary energy needs. The consumption of liquid products grew from 107.6 million metric tons in 2005 to 177.80million metric tons in 2014.
